19 Gaddis, Thomas E. Birdman of Alcatraz, The (Story of Robert Stroud, The)
U.S. Signet (NAL) Books. #D1550. First Signet (NAL ) Edition. Mass Market Paperback. About Very Good.
July, 1958. $.60 is the original price. 253 pages which contains Advertising and a Petition for Clemency for Stroud. .Light beige paper. Tight binding.
Front Cover: Small handling marks and some transparent water spots.
Spine: Two light creases from book opening.
Back Cover: Small scratches and transparent water spots.
In General: A couple of pages have sentences underlined or something written beside them so this book seems to bring out people to comment on the book.A previous Owner very lightly wrote her name in pencil at the top of the first page and enclosed is a short newspaper clipping about Stroud.
Story: Stroud's life in prison. He killed two people and spent the rest of his life behind bars for it. While there he became a self - taught expert in bird diseases as well as teaching himself to read French so at least, in a way he contributed something to Society.
On the other hand we have people like Carl Chessman who also killed people (many years ago by stalking women in Lover's Lane) and while in prison taught himslf Law and became an expert but he was still executed despite writing a couple of books about things. He killed. So. Do we execute killers or keep them locked up?
We have a killer in Canada about to be sentenced soon for killing an elderly couple. He refuses to say where the bodies are and while out on Bail was arrested for stealing copper wire. No inner feelings about anything and probably figures he's smarter than everyone around him. So. What do we do? His smart ass Lawyer says to sentence him to three years in jail and because he's already been in jail for a while he'd be released in one year. The Crown wants life. What would you do? Surely not ask for only three years for killing two elderly people? Meanwhile, this nasty guy wants to sue the Police because he says they treated him badly when he was in jail. A travesty. Very disgusting. 005101

$1.25 is the original price. 311 pages plus Advertising. Medium beige paper. Tight binding. Red colour on the edges.
