Nightmare, The, Forester, C.S.

Story: Forester wrote this book based on information gathered after the war ended about the attempted assassination of Hiter in his War Bunker by various Generals who wanted to get rid of him so they could approach us about stopping the war and saving Germany from the destruction they feared would soon happen. In light of all the massacers and destruction the Nazis caused and their utter ruthlessness toward people they conquered I doubt that we would have accepted anything except complete capitulation and there were too many Nazi fanatics who probably wouldn't have accepted this. As is, depsite all the bungling that went on on all sides the Nazis came damn close to conquering the world as they were developing weapons so far in advance that we had nothing to beat them with. So..... 004625

Hurricane Story, The, Gallico, Paul
9 Gallico, Paul Hurricane Story, The
Canada. Berkley Pub. Corp. 1959 #Y662. First Berkley Medallion Book Edition. Mass Market Paperback. Fair. Water Touched.
$.40 is the original price. 143 pages plus some Advertising. Light beige paper. Tight binding. Red colour on the edges with one water touched spot at the top of the right edge.
In General: Indents, creases and a 1" tear's at the bottom by the Spine side.
Story: Gallico wrote a readable account ot the birth and use of the Hawker Hurricane during Word War 2. I browsed the book and from what I've read elsewhere what he says generally gibes with other figures and Writers as the Brits were usually making up their figures when comparing their losses versus the Nazi ones. Goering miscaculated and probably could have won the Battle of Britain in the air if he'd stopped screwing around and continued to concentrate on knocking off our planes first and then knocking out the airfields after during the various battes. And it would have helped if they'd had Radar. It's a very readable book as Gallico's a good Writer. If I was still a serious Collector I'd probably keep the book as once a Collector, usually aways a Collector. It gets in your blood to hold a book. Something like holding a good-looking woman with one arm and a glass of Scotch in the other, so to say. Recommended. (The book, not the other.) 004557

11 Howarth, David D Day the Sixth of June, 1944

June, 1969. $.75 is the original price. 256 pages. Light medium beige paper. Tight binding. Orange on the edges.
Front Cover: Three creases but two are very small. The third one's about 3" and seems to be just a slight bend from opening the book. The edges have small bits of wear.
Spine: A 2" indent's at the middle of the right side but this is due to uneven Folios when the book was manufactured. A bit of light wear's at the edges.
Back Cover: Light wear at the edges and some handling marks from holding open the book are at the middle. Nothing much.
Story: When Hitler started World War 2 he was able to drive out the Allies and conquer all of Europe. But in 1944 Eisenhower led the Allied armies and they invaded Europe and forced the Nazis to eventually surrender. Fifty million people died in the war because Hitler thought that Germans were meant to rule the world as they were the "Aryan Race" and all others were inferior to them and only fit to be their Servants and workers. A sort on Untermensch as they arrogantly liked to call Jewish people. The Nazis were a depraved bunch. 004962

All Quiet on the Russian Front, Stock, Kurt W.
18 Stock, Kurt W. All Quiet on the Russian Front
Canada. Pocket Books. #671-78630-X. Second Pocket Books Edition. Mass Market Paperback. Mint Minus.
June, 1973. $1.50 is the original price. 228 pages plus Advertising. Light beige paper, darker at the bottom 1". Tight binding. Red colour on the edges.
In General: About four scuff marks are at the top of the Front Cover and a slight indent's at the right edge from other pocket books pressing on this one from being packed in a box before I got to it.
Story: A German soldier's recounting of being captured by the Russians just before the end of the war and being shipped to work in Siberia. I browsed the book and it reads quite well.
However.....let us not forget that Germany started the war, Herr Stock, and its soldiers were very cruel to the people, especially the crazy SS s.o.b's who thought they were next to God and scared the hell even out of Germans. I regret what happened to everyone on both sides but it was tit for tat and revenge for German cruelty. While German soldiers were winning they acted like barbarians and showed no mercy to those they conquered in battle and shot many Canadian unarmed and surrendered soldiers. The Germans reaped what they had sowed. That is life. Do someone dirt and eventually it comes back on you. 004511

$1.50 (Can) is the original price. 318 pages plus some Advertising. Light beige paper, a bit darker at the bottom edge.Tight binding. Translator: Bray, Barbara.
Spine: The usual crease from book opening otherwise just a small circle's on the Front Cover where a price sticker once was.
In General: A black felt marker line's at the top edge which indicates this book was a return.
Story: This is a very strange but interesting book involving Hitler Jugend , SS and Nazi mythology originally spread by the Thule Society and SS under Himmler to recreate German Mysticism and ancient Folklore to go with their idea that Germans were Herrenvolk and the only ones fit to rule all of Earth while the rest of us Mensch were UnterMensch. I browsed the book and it reads well. Recommended. Still a strange book, though, but it reads true from what I studied about that period in History for Germany. 004554

Anzio, Vaughan-Thomas, Wynford
20 Vaughan-Thomas, Wynford Anzio
U.K. Pan Books Ltd. 1963 #M40. First Pan Books Edition. Mass Market Paperback. Very Good.
267 pages with a Bibliography and Index. Contains: Black and white photos and maps showing various stages of the Campaign.
Front Cover: Some small fingernail indents from opening the book.
Spine: The usual crease from book opening.
Back Cover: A couple of fingernail indents from book opening plus a 4" crease near the Spine which's also from book opening.
In General: The first pages at the front of the book have a partial light bend at the top, right corner and page 169 has a large creased upper corner used as a bookmark, this outline continuing for several other pages.
Story: The German drive to push the Allies from their Beachhead at Anzio, which almost succeeded. It's rather interesting if you read how the former Nazi Generals acted when in prison cells in Nurembourg. Not quite so arrogant then. Twits. 004692

Sailor's Odyssey, Viscount Cunninham of Hyndhope, Vice Admiral of the Fleet
21 Viscount Cunninham of Hyndhope, Vice Admiral of the Fleet Sailor's Odyssey
U.K. Grey Arrow Books 1961 #G02. First Grey Arrow Edition. Mass Market Paperback. Good Plus.
Six Shillings is the original price. 335 pages plus some book Advertising on the inside of the Back Cover. Tight binding. Light beige paper. Contains: A few maps and an Index.
Front Cover: A long crease from book opening's beside the Spine side and another two are beside the missing piece of Cover you'll see on the Cover scan. There are also smaller creases.
Spine: A bit wrinkled and has wear at the edges.
Back Cover: A couple of creases and a couple of slide mark scuffing lines. The top left corner's creased about " - wide. Some slight wear's at the left and right edges.
In General: The pages are quite flexible and his Story's interesting with not much self - patting on his back for this or that the soldiers and sailors deserve credit for doing as usually they do all the heavy lifting everywhere and the "Boss" assumes credit for sitting in his comfy Offices while they get killed fighting. War isn't a pretty thing.
This is Volume two and carries Cunningham's Autobiography from April, 1941 to August, 1945. It's detailed but quite readable. Recommended. 004696

Penguin Books. 1964 #2122. First Penguin Books Edition. Mass Market Paperback. Fine Minus.
$.85 is the original price. 240 pages. Light medium beige paper. Tight binding.
In General: A few handling marks are on both Covers and the usual crease's on the Spine from book opening. I left the original price sticker covering the English price athough it's becoming transparent with age. To remove it probably would just leave an outline. The Front Cover seems to have some outlining of the characters but I'm not really certain about this. The Back Cover has a " x 1" indent at the top left corner and some handling marks, as mentioned, but they're nothing much.
Story: This book's the completion of a Trilogy Waugh wrote in which his characters face up to World War 2. 004556
