Welcome to Alderton Books

Condition:

Depending on condition, our items vary from Mint/Very Fine, to Reading copies and are priced accordingly. We also take into consideration scarcity and condition of an item. If we feel that what we offer is in superior condition to other Dealers then we charge a higher price, determined by our own pricing formula. If the condition is so-so, then we charge much less, of course.

A book is listed with most of the little nicks and dents we see, much as one buys a used car. What you get, is what you've already seen by reading our description. There are no surprises. Plus, there's always our Cover scan to look at as all items have this - (Front Cover only).

New Titles are periodically added. All items are checked, Cover-to-Cover, to ensure that the contents are intact and in order to properly describe condition. Books need to be treated with respect and this is part of the service. We feel that if we wouldn't want a book in our own Collection then how could we expect someone else to want it. It's the ethics of the thing.

Each Title is usually a single item, but sometimes duplicate copies pop up as we go along.

Comics:

We consider Illustrators to be the ones who did the pencil work for comics, and list them, as such. Inkers are simply copiers.

 First Edition Entries:

When a book is listed as a First Edition, it means that this is a First Edition for that particular Book Company printing. It doesn't mean that it's always the True First Edition (when the book was first printed, anywhere). We'll mention True First Editions, whenever it's listed on the printed page by the Publisher of the book.
Some Publishers state that their printing is an Original, which we construe as meaning a True First Edition, and it's listed as such.

If a book is listed as being published in Canada/U.S., this means that the cover was printed in the U.S. and the body of the book was printed in Canada. This came about in order to comply with (then) Canadian government regulations for having Canadian content. First Editions in Canada, the U.S., or the U.K. don't necessarily coincide as to dates published, but they're still First Editions.

Postage Rates and Delivery Times:

To help you to decide the amount of postage to send with an order we now list rates (roughly) according to the number of pages in a pocket book or the type of magazine which will provide an approximate weight for that postage rate, depending on whether you wnt Air or Surface mail.
We'll email you if extra postage is required, so please look at your email. However, we've found, so far, that listing postal rates by the number of book pages appears to work rather well most of the time.

If you don't reply to several emails when we do need to request extra mail funding then we refund your money as we have to assume that you're not interested.

There are at least 9 types of mail rates. Surface mail is slow, but (relatively) cheap, and we suggest this, except for overseas where a book can take up to three months to  arrive  in some countries so we suggest using Air. Otherwise,  delivery times are, roughly, about 2 weeks, to 3 weeks,  plus.

Note that magazines with glossy paper weigh quite a bit so don't assume that they can be sent at a pocket book rate. Comics are a different matter, of course.

Local, city delivery service costs $2.00 extra for an order, which covers the gas. We'll deliver your order, provided we can locate the address and we can agree on a time. Please email us to confirm, beforehand, as we prefer to do it in the daytime, when streets, and numbers of houses are easily read.
There are no special Book Rates in Canada and postage charges are usually higher from this country.

Communication via email:

Please check your email as we always send a confirmation when an order has been processed.

PayPal/Credit Cards Payment:

When using a Credit Card, you will be asked to choose a payment method. Click the "Credit Card (Via PayPal)".

This brings you to the PayPal log-in page. Fill the requested information,  sign in, go to the left side and click the credit card you will be using, then fill in the information requested.

Please note that, you, yourself, don't need a PayPal account.  PayPal is the only one who sees this information, not us, as we prefer it this way.

Once payment has been received by PayPal they immediately notify us to ship your order. Usually, this is within a few minutes of your sending payment to PayPal and they provide you with their security number. Your only extra charge will be from your own credit provider, for using your card.

                 NOTE:
You must have a PayPal number, issued by PayPal, to confirm that your payment has been processed by PayPal. If there's no number appearing, then your order hasn't been processed and will have to be repeated. In this case, we'll restore the original book to Inventory so you're able to redo the transaction, if you choose.
PayPal also provides a Toll-free telephone number where they can be reached if you're having problems.

How to View Photos for  Books:

In order to have a nice close-up scan of Front Covers and/or Wrappers, place your mouse pointer and click on the image, or underlined book/magazine Title. When this is done a colour photo scan appears and you'll be able to see an enlarged view of the book/magazine.

Front Cover scans are available only as the pictures take up a lot of space. If you wish to view a Back Cover scan, please send an email to request it. We mention this as, sometimes, the Front Cover is in so-so condition on books which are listed as a Reading Copy, or as damaged, while the Back Cover could be in very good, to excellent condition, or vice versa.

You can also use the photos available to judge for yourself whether descriptions are accurate. We provide Front Cover scans of everything listed.
